Uganda tourism sector’s 2011-2012 indicate improvement

Basing on the report of the year, there is an increase in the number of tourists who are currently visiting the country form different parts of the world. The report was compiled by the ministry of tourism and Antiquities sector for the financial year 2011/2012 and it indicates that the tourism industry contributed to 9.0% to the GDP for 2011 compared to 7.6% in 2010 and also its contribution to foreign exchange increased from US$ 662m in 2010 to US$805m in 2011 which is about 21% improvement.

According to the report, Uganda received 1,151,000 visitors in the year 2011 which is about  21.6% from 2010 (945,899), park arrivals increased from 190,000 in 2010 to 208,000 in 2011 and that is 9.4% increase. Equally, Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) also received 263,000 visitors. This is a good performance all together and this is as a result of the improved marketing strategies established by the ministry aimed at selling the country’s tourism sector outside the African Continent.

Meanwhile, the Acting Principal Policy Analyst for the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Mr. Alex Asiimwe said while talking to the East African Business Week that the ministry has been able to improve on the marketing strategies through attending world tourism exhibitions, printing magazines and brochures that ended up in developed countries like in Europe and therefore improved the country’s sector visibilities to the rest of the world.

He added that this sector has managed to thrive despite the different challenges it’s facing. This is so far a well done job by the sector and hopefully will continue with it in the next financial years so that Uganda will prosper in the region.

When you look at the sector performing report for the ministry of Tourism Antiquities and Heritage for 2011/2012, there were 20, 000 assorted promotional materials that were distributed through missions and international exhibitions and to tour operators. 2000 flyers and stickers were distributed in the UK. 1000 flyers in Canada, 500 materials sent to the Ugandan High Commission in the UK. 1000 flyers and stickers were distributed in Japan and 500 were distributed domestically during World Tourism Day. 1000 maps, 1000 DVDs and 700 copies of destination Uganda during the
